The Rider’s Mind Podcast Episode 72: Planning for 2021

This episode is about goal setting for 2021. I’ve never been much of a goal setter, but I do feel it’s important to have something you’re working towards. When things get tough, you’ll remember what you’re working for and have an incentive to do what needs to be done to get you there. I’ll explain how to focus on who you need to be in order to achieve the things you want to achieve.

Goal setting has never been my thing. I will set goals and work towards them, but I try not to obsess over my goals. I focus on the journey and work on who I need to become in order to achieve my goals without compromising my values. I am aware that part of my resistance to setting goals is because of my own baggage around what it means to not reach my goal. It has been hard for me to set a goal and then not achieve it.

What works best for me is focusing on becoming the type of person that would achieve the goals I’m working towards. I ask questions like what would a person who achieved this be doing right now?

Thinking about who you want to become in order to achieve your goals:

Write down your goal down and dissect what you need to let go of and who you need to be in order to achieve it. It’s not what you want to do, but who you need to be (in order to get the results that you’re looking for).

Looking back on 2020, my goals were not able to be achieved since there were no rodeos. I’m a little disappointed in my “becoming” who I wanted to be. I kind of let that slide when I had nowhere to go. I started out with good momentum in January and February. I was working on my horsemanship, my health and my physical abilities. Then things took a turn. 2020 is probably not a good year to really assess, but it happened. I’ve put together a download for you to use to reflect on 2020 and plan for 2021.

Keep faith that you’ll be able to go places and compete in 2021.

Grab a journal, download this set of questions by entering your email address (which will also subscribe you to my email list), and start making plans for 2021.

Once you’ve got a plan and a set of goals, there will be tradeoffs and sacrifices to make. You need to decide what you’re willing to sacrifice.

“Many people delay taking action because they hope to avoid suffering. They keep searching for a path that won’t involve tradeoffs. But some form of suffering is always inevitable. The process of taking action is the process of choosing your pain.” – James Clear

The journey to where you’re going is where all the memories are made, all the lessons are learned and where the magic happens.

It’s not just about the goal, but it’s how the goal was achieved that will also be very memorable. Make sure that the goal you choose supports the person that you want to be. Don’t lose yourself because you’re so focused on the end result. It’s in the becoming that the results are seen and the goals are met.

Who do you need to be in order to do what you want to do?

Start BEING that person and DOING the things that person would do to get the results you are looking for.

Don’t wait until you’ve lost the weight, found the right partner, changed jobs, the kids have grown, your horse starts clocking…..whatever it is you’re using as a reason to wait to BE the winner now….. Drop that and start being all that you are today.

One of the first modules I did in my Stride coaching group was on working on our identities and who we believe we are. It’s available to everyone in Stride now and in the future so when you join, you’ll be able to get into greater detail. We will be accepting new members again in the new year, so if you want to be the first to know and possibly get yourself a waitlist discount go to get on the Stride waitlist.
